Alaska Airlines
Alaska Airlines is a full-service airlines based near Seattle in SeaTac, Washington. It currently includes four hubs of operation in the Western region of the United States -- Los Angeles International Airport, Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport, Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, and Portland International Airport. This means Alaska has strong presences in all five of the L.A. area's major airports, as well as three of the Bay Area's most important flight hubs.
Historically speaking, Alaska Airlines has been one of the largest and most active air travel providers in the Western region of the states (including Alaska itself). Its route system as a whole currently encompasses more than 92 different cities scattered across not only the United States, but also Canada and Mexico as well.
Alaska Airlines is known for featuring a number of in-flight services that help make travel easier, more enjoyable, and more comfortable for passengers. First-class customers enjoy complimentary meals and snacks with the price of their ticket. Alaska also features a buy-on-board meal program called Northern Bites on all flights in excess of three hours for its coach customers. The year 2009 saw the advent of in-flight broadband wireless internet access for the convenience of all passengers.
The airline is also considered a leader when it comes to in-flight entertainment. In 2003, the World Airline Entertainment Association (WAEA) recognized Alaska Airlines as being the very first airline to offer passengers the use of a portable audio-video-on-demand device called the digEplayer that allows them to enjoy a wide variety of television shows, films, and audio programs during their flight. (The player itself was actually brainstormed and marketed by an Alaska Airlines baggage handler.)
The implementation of the player earned Alaska the Airline IFE Service of the Year award in March of 2004. Use of the players can be reserved online at the time of flight reservation and are complimentary to first-class travelers. Coach passengers are able to rent them for a small fee.
Alaska Airlines also features an airport lounge known as the Board Room. The cities that currently include Alaska Airlines Board Rooms are Anchorage, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Portland, Seattle, and Vancouver. Members of the Board Room have access to the following clubs - Northwest Airlines WorldClubs, Delta Air Lines Crown Room Club, and Continental Airlines President's Club.
Alaska Airlines is currently not part of any major global airline alliances. However it does have codeshare agreements with a number of other United States air service providers. These include American Airlines, Delta Airlines, Northwest Airlines, Continental Airlines, PenAir, and Era Aviation, although the great majority of these agreements are with American. There are also a number of codeshare agreements in place between Alaska and a number of foreign air service providers such as British Airways, Korean Air, and Qantas.
Airline miles credit card users should consider looking for an air miles credit program that supports Alaska Airlines if they are looking for proven, quality flight services that are considered to be on the cutting edge of progress - especially if they live and work either in Alaska or on the West Coast of the United States.
