Northwest Airlines

Northwest Airlines is a major American air travel provider that is also a wholly-owned subsidiary of Delta Air Lines, Inc. It currently has its headquarters in the Minnesota city of Eagan near Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport, which is also one of its three major hubs of operation. The other two hubs are located in Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport and Memphis International Airport. In addition to these, Northwest also has a focus city operation at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, as well as a foreign hub near Tokyo at Narita International Airport.

In terms of total scheduled passenger miles flown (both domestically and internationally), Northwest is considered to be the sixth largest airline in the world. It also carries the most American passengers across the Pacific Ocean of any other U.S. based airline. It also operates one of the largest domestic route networks and carries more domestic air cargo than any other United States travel provider, meaning Northwest is truly a force to be reckoned with within the business.

The merger between Northwest and fellow airline giant Delta Airlines took place in October of 2008. At that time, Delta became the single largest airline with the widest reach in the entire world. Nevertheless, Northwest continued to do business and convey passengers as an independent provider for several more months while the operating certificates and other necessaries were finalized once and for all. Full integration between the two airlines - the rebranding of gates, et cetera -- is still continuing throughout 2009 and will most likely proceed on into 2010.

Northwest passenger flights offer both premium and economy class options. Premium class is called "World Business Class" on international flights and "Domestic First Class" on domestic flights. Both options feature a number of perks, upgrades, and amenities including complimentary meals, snacks, alcoholic beverages, and other refreshments. Audio-Video-On-Demand entertainment, moveable reading lights, swivel cocktail tables, universal power ports, and convenient folding work tables are available as well.

On economy class flights, passengers receive free meals, snacks, and refreshments for international flights and buy-on-board options for domestic flights. If alcoholic beverages are desired, they must be purchased for additional fees. Audio-Video-On-Demand entertainment is also available, as are power ports on seats located in certain rows.

Like many major airlines, Northwest offers its own frequent flyer program for the benefit of regular travelers and special customers. WorldPerks allows access to the opportunity to earn many of the standard frequent flyer amenities including complimentary seating upgrades, free or greatly discounted tickets, discounted lounge membership, and other rewards. Miles can be accrued either through Northwest itself or alternatively through one of its many partners which include hotels, car rental agencies, retailers, and so forth.

In addition to the standard level, WorldPerks also encompasses a number of elite tiers - Sliver, Gold, and Platinum respectively according to level. Members who have obtained elite status gain an increased level of priority, greater rewards, and a greater opportunity to earn free air miles as appropriate.

Credit users in the market for a new airline miles credit card should consider applying for WorldPerks or any other program that covers Northwest services if they are looking to travel with a well-established, well-respected airline with an ironclad reputation for excellence.
