Southwest Airlines

Southwest Airlines is a major U.S. air travel provider notable for its clean service record and its ability to offer terrific services at low fares to help accommodate travelers on a budget. In terms of actual revenue, Southwest Airlines is the 6th largest American airline. Operating a whopping average of 3,500 flights each day, it also boasts the second-largest fleet of passenger aircraft in the entire world.

Southwest's headquarters is located in Dallas, Texas right next to Love Field airport. It also has a large focus city operation going at Las Vegas' McCarran International Airport. Other major centers for Southwest Airlines operations include Fort-Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, O'Hare International Airport, Miami International Airport, Houston's Hobby Airport, and T.F. Green Airport in Providence, Rhode Island among many, many others.

Southwest Airlines stands apart from the general populace of other major airlines for a number of reasons, the first of which is their business model. They are known for flying multiple quick trips into secondary airports at a number of major cities, which helps reduce cost and boost efficiency in one step. They also do this using a single type of aircraft - the Boeing 737.

Southwest is also especially noteworthy for being one of the first airlines to step into the future by joining the internet age and establishing a company website in March of 1995. For the first time, customers could check schedules, read up on company information, and look over route maps, revolutionizing the way many people thought of making travel plans. Southwest.com remains to this day the number one airline site when it comes to both online revenue and sheer number of online visitors. An estimated 70% of Southwest's bookings in 2006 originated online.

Passengers cannot purchase tickets to fly Southwest Airlines through Travelocity or similar online travel venues. Although some reservations are booked through travel agents, the great majority of accommodations are made via direct contact with the airline itself either by telephone or online. (Online is especially popular as special web deals often apply.)

Passengers can change or adjust their reservations without having to pay additional fees, but do not have the option of same-day standby travel unless an upgrade is obtained. Also, passengers are assigned to "boarding groups" as opposed to being given assigned seating, leaving them to choose their own seating once on board the aircraft. This helps facilitate the seating and boarding process.

Although refreshments, snacks and meals are available, Southwest Airlines flights do not include in-flight entertainment. However, they are well-known for their animated and lively flight crews who are known to be quite entertaining in and of themselves. Overall, Southwest boasts a very high customer satisfaction rating, so it's likely that many passengers find these differences refreshing and preferable to alternatives.

Southwest Airlines' frequent flyer program is known as Rapid Rewards. Each time a passenger flies one-way with Southwest, they receive a credit. Once a Rapid Rewards member accrues 16 credits within a 2-year period, they are issued a free ticket good for a period of 11 months. Members also earn a certain amount toward credits with purchases made on a Rapid Rewards Visa credit card.

Those in the market for an airline miles credit card should consider a program that covers travel with Southwest Airlines if they are looking to fly an unconventional, but extremely affordable airline that has a terrific record when it comes to both service and customer satisfaction.
