Trans World Airlines (TWA)
Trans World Airlines (also well-known as TWA) was a major United States based air service provider known for its extensive reach and notable service record. It was acquired by fellow air travel giant American Airlines in 2001, but before that was one of the single biggest domestic airlines that featured flights to the great majority of the U.S.'s major cities. TWA also boasted an important international operations network as well. Its major hubs of operation were located in New York, Atlanta, and St. Louis with additional focus centers conveniently located in Los Angeles, San Juan, and Kansas City.
TWA was born in 1930 when Transcontinental Air Transport and Western Air Express joined forces to form Transcontinental & Western Air (also known as T&WA). After years of evolution and a long line of different changes, the airline's name was officially changed in 1950 to Trans World Airlines.
TWA is a notable name in the airline industry for a number of different reasons. To begin with, it was one of the first major airlines in the entire world to integrate the spoke-hub distribution paradigm into the way it conducted its business. It was also among the very first airlines to begin using the now legendary Boeing 747 model aircraft.
At one point, TWA was even planning on advancing to the point where they'd be using supersonic travel technology to power people from origin to destination in record time right from gates placed close to the street. However, this proved to be impractical when Cuban hijacking incidents during the late 1960's required the installment of tighter security measures, including central checkpoints. Furthermore, Trans World Airlines was one of the very first airlines to adopt an all-jet line-up when they retired their last remaining Lockheed L-1049 Super Constellation and L-Starliner crafts in mid-1967.
Shortly before the official merger with American, Trans World Airlines and American Airlines formed a codeshare agreement. It was at that time that many of the biggest changes began to take place within TWA itself - especially in regards to the standard routes it flew - mostly domestic from this point out. A number of international destinations were dropped altogether, although services to Paris, London, and a few major locations in the Middle East remained on the roster.
Like many major airlines, TWA also had a special club located at a number of airports for the convenience and comfort of its valued passengers. It was known as the Ambassadors Club. When TWA merged with American Airlines in 2001, some of the clubs remained open under the new ownership while others closed down.
